Volunteering: A year-round labor of love

Posted on April 8th, 2016

Greeting blood donors, transporting vitally needed blood products to hospitals — it’s all in a days “work” for LifeStream’s volunteer team.

And that’s not all. Volunteers are involved in many aspects of LifeStream’s daily operations, but the goal is the same — that the mission statement (“We help save lives by connecting donors and  patients through the gift of blood“) be fulfilled 365 days a year.

National Volunteer Week is here, and LifeStream salutes our fantastic group of volunteers all week. But, really, they are celebrated each day by those giving blood, by local medical professionals, by those in need and their loved ones. Because LifeStream volunteers play an integral role in the lifesaving process.

The awards and accolades coming their way are nice, and certainly deserved. But the greatest reward this week and the other 51 during the year is knowing they have a hand in helping a child battling cancer, a mom giving birth, an accident victim suddenly needing assistance.

Students, retirees, and all ages in between are involved in the program. There’s room for you, too. You’re in invited to take the first step toward joining a team of unsung heroes by clicking here or calling 800-879-4484 ext. 458.

Welcome 2016! Welcome National Blood Donor Month!

Posted on January 15th, 2016

That’s right — the year begins with a celebration of those who quietly, anonymously, and without need of reward, help save lives.

LifeStream thanks its donors and blood donors everywhere for giving the gift of life. You are carrying a heavy load — and it is appreciated.

National Blood Donor Month was first celebrated in 1970. A lot has changed since 1970. A LOT! But this hasn’t – there is no substitute for volunteer donors when members of their community undergo surgeries, are treated for cancer, are victims of trauma or otherwise experience a sudden, unexpected need for blood transfusion.

A grim reminder of how vital it is to always have blood on hospital shelves was provided December 2 when local hospitals needed an immediate, significant supply of blood to treat the wounded following the mass shooting in San Bernardino.

National Blood Donor Month is to say “thank you.” It also is serves as a gentle ask, a reminder, to those on the sidelines and want to make a difference, as to what is possible thanks to blood donation. The need is not decreasing. Shortages are not an option.

The start of the year is an ideal time to join a lifesaving team. All blood types and donation types — think platelets and plasma — are needed. To set an appointment to assist local patients and give comfort to their loved ones, call LifeStream at 1.800.879.4484 or go to LStream.org.

Have a safe, healthy and happy 2016.

O-negative blood shortage is real and immediate

Posted on November 19th, 2015

LifeStream and the hospitals we serve need your help. Now. Our shelves are depleted of O-negative blood. And with the holiday season coming up, the situation can become even graver.

“O-negs,” your value to your community is immense! Your red cells are unique as they can be accepted by any patient. In emergencies, when seconds count, O-neg is the go-to blood type for local ER doctors. It simply HAS to be there. Those doctors are counting on you!

And did you know that when you or a “fellow O-neg” need a transfusion, the system MUST have O-negative?

See why you’re so important, and how a shortage of O-neg could affect so many?

Please give your special gift! Donate O-negative whole-blood at a LifeStream donor center during this critical period and receive a $10 gas card. Donate double red cells (appointment required) and receive a $20 gas card. Please act TODAY! Set your appointment to give blood calling 800-879-4484 or clicking here

What are YOU thankful for?

Posted on November 18th, 2015

A healthy family. A strong military. A sturdy roof and clear rain gutters (especially with El Nino on the way). Steady work. Thoughtful, compassionate guidance from a parent, or a teacher, or a coach.  A #1 fantasy football team. A new pet. A new home. A new spouse.

Thanksgiving is just around the corner. What are you thankful for?

Thousands in our community will be thankful for YOU — when you give blood. We’re officially in one of “the” most challenging periods each year for blood banks nationwide to match supply with demand.  Hospitals need it, only voluntary donors can give it. It’s blood — types O, A, B, AB, positive and negative.

Each year, we pledge to begin and conclude our holiday shopping earlier than the previous. Right? Usually we fail. Here’s another pledge to make, one easier to fulfill. Give blood!

The supply of blood products decreases because more people are traveling, schools are out, schedules are no longer routine, but scrambled. Donating blood can get lost in the shuffle in the planning and fun times.

At the same time, the demand for blood products increases due to more traffic on the roads and more physical activity, all of which present greater risk for harm which could require transfusion.

Heroes give others cause for appreciation. And can have heroes of their own.

Now, what are you thankful for?

Donate platelets, and take a meaningful stand against cancer

Posted on October 19th, 2015

Platelets are an enemy of cancer. And we can give them to those in the fight!

Platelets, the blood component most responsible for clotting and stopping bleeding,  must be transfused within 5 days of being donated.

But donating platelets may give someone battling cancer a lifetime.

Put this one in ink!

Posted on September 1st, 2015

Effective Monday, Aug. 31, LifeStream eliminated its policy of requiring a 1-year tattoo deferral period for those wishing to donate blood.

Safety of the community blood supply is paramount. LifeStream joins other community blood centers in feeling recently stepped-up efforts to regulate and monitor establishments that “ink” protect both blood donor and transfusion recipient.

“Since the 2012 implementation of the “Safe Body Art Act” in California, body art establishments are required to register with local enforcement agencies and meet strict criteria, including the use of sterile needles and non-reused ink. This has made the process safe in the eyes of most California blood banks,” said Joe Chaffin, M.D., vice president, chief medical officer for LifeStream.

To be eligible to donate blood:

  • Tattoos would have been applied at a professional licensed establishment within the state of California.
  • The area(s) most recently tattooed must be fully healed from the procedure.
  • The potential donor must satisfy all other screening and physical requirements set forth by the FDA.

Do these guidelines apply to you or someone you know? If so, please call 800-879-4484 and press “1” or visit any LifeStream center or mobile drive to discuss your individual case with us.
